Alien head

This is Milo, the alien/dragon head I created. This project started as a sketch which I then physically modeled and sculpted using clay [process seen below]. I then used the clay model as a reference as I modeled in it Blender. My full pipeline is below in the section “The 3D Process” and shown in the video. This was my first time sculpting with Zbrush.

Blender | Zbrush| Substance Painter | Unreal Engine

This video explains my pipeline from modeling in Blender to sculpting and adding detail in Zbrush to baking the high and low models in substance painter where I colored and textured my model. I then imported it into Unreal Engine in the video but also imported it back into Blender where I displayed it for the image above.

the 3d process

To the left is the sketch I made after a few iterations of aliens/dragon heads. I then based my clay sculpture off of this drawing. My clay process was:

the sketch and clay models

  1. I started by drilling a few holes into a black of wood for stability and hot gluing in the wire that I had bent into a head shape.

  2. I then covered the wire in tin foil so this way I only had to put a thin layer of clay on top. I then separately made horns with wire sticking out the bottom [as seen in the bottom right of the third image] so I could add detail before I stuck them into the head.

  3. After that I added eyes and the scales to the top of the head

  4. Using a heat gun I smoothed out the surface

  5. Added final details including the nose, teeth and whiskers

  6. Head was complete and ready to be 3d modeled!
