Video

When I was a kid, I would use a video-making app called “VideoStar” to make gymnastics edits and lip sync videos. Now that I’m older, I find this hobby resurfacing when I feel the urge to document activities I do or the world around me. I enjoy making these little videos and see them as a way of honoring my similar interests and creative hobbies from childhood.

I was on a photo walk with my friend when I decided I wanted to document what I saw around me through video. I saw the beauty in the Autumn plants, flowers and trees, blowing in the wind. I was amused by the other people also there and that they all have their own lives that led them to the same place. I was intrigued by the animals in their habitat, interacting with the environment and with each other. I always have liked to say I love the little things in life and in this video I wanted to share that.

The art of noticing

I decided to document my dressmaking process using only diegetic sound — no narration, music, or sound effects. I wanted to keep the raw audio to emphasize the tactile, handmade nature of the work. I also used the sounds and clip lengths to build tension as I moved closer to the final result which mirrored the feelings I experienced physically while sewing. The beginning is calm and steady, but as time passes, I grew more irritable knowing that the end is near, but not quite there. After a series of quick, sharp clips, I tried to create a sense of release and breath which reflected the satisfaction of completing the project.
